Bias: Profiling Inflicted Division
The persistent practice of racial profiling is not only ineffective but also unjust and unconstitutional. A person's skin color should never serve as a basis for assumptions about their character or likelihood to commit a crime. When individuals are unfairly grouped into categories based on race, religion, or ethnicity, it strains the relationship between law enforcement and communities. Racial profiling not only leads to life-altering consequences for individuals but also undermines the moral fabric of our society. Such consequences, particularly those affecting societal perceptions of morality and ethics, breed deep divisions and perpetuate harmful stereotypes. However, by fostering awareness, education, and open communication, we can realign our diverse society and unite as one human race.
The evolution of my wall piece began with the representation of racial profiling through the depiction of two faces. As I delved deeper into the concept, I experimented with burning the edges to imbue the piece with the appearance of a scorched protest sign, adding layers of symbolism. This exploration led me to the creation of a second version, where I further incorporated metaphors to convey the complexities of the issue at hand.
